Writing a resume for a career change?

Question by ty: Writing a resume for a career change?
I’m a math high school teacher who’s currently working on my MBA. I’ll be graduating in one to two semesters. I’m looking to change my career. Any suggestions for writing a resume for someone who’s switching from education to business?

Also, a career in business includes various types of occupations. Any ideas on any sites I could possibly visit to pinpoint what I’d really be interested in? I’ve already spent five years in education and knew within the first year it wasn’t for me and that’s why I’m on working on my MBA. I’d really like to find a job that I enjoy.

Thanks!

One Response to Writing a resume for a career change?

  1. Tandem Resumes

Career transitions can be difficult, but certainly rewarding if you can step into a position that allows you to lean into your core strengths. Of course, this requires that you have a firm idea of what your core strengths are. These are not just the “things you are good at,” but rather those aspects of your personality that energize you.

As for what kinds of “business” positions might leverage a background as a math teacher, a few ideas come to mind. If you are technically savvy, you could try Consultative Sales within Tech. You might also look into Financial Sales. If you consider yourself to be analytical and a problem solver (two strengths I could imagine a math teacher possessing), you could look into a Systems/Business Analyst position. Of course, these are just a few ideas.

I highly recommend you take the time to really examine and discover your strengths before you begin the process of creating job search documents. Not only will the process boost your confidence, but it will help you to create documents that more effectively position you for the transition. Additionally, if your resume and cover letter are really selling strengths, you will interview much better, as you will be speaking to things about which you are passionate.

    Beast of luck to you!
