Question by Ashley: which MBA concentration is good for next years job market?
I am in the MBA program and I have to choose my concentration (and my electives based on that) next term (winter). based on recent trends of job market, can anyone advise me which concentration is good for next year ( I will graduate by the next August). In my school there are many concentrations to choose from: Strategic management, operation management, supply chain management, marketing and sales, finance, accounting, human resources.
I am leaning towards strategic management and/or operation management but many think I have to choose my concentration based on the future job market.
So what do you think is the best choice?
Thank you.

Plants are closing – there will be an over supply of managers looking for work and they have experience already. I’d stay away from the management functions unless you’re already highly placed there.
Companies that manage to stay in business will always need to sell product, raise funds, account for the money, and hire people.
Forbes tells us that sales jobs are going to hold up through the recession. They also think accountants and college faculty will be in high demand through the recession. If you do finance or accounting and get your CPA then you will remain marketable. As faculty go, good finance people are a bit hard to find.
HR is their 25th ranked recession proofed gig – I’m not seeing that out here though. I’m seeing HR specialties being outsourced and the in-house teams being let go. Not too bad for me as the source of outsourcing but not so great for those relying on a salaried seat.
Some people are predicting that next August will be a very bad time to be looking for a job. Prepare yourself for some options.
