which is better an MBA or a Law degree or having a bachelors from a top tier school?
Question by truth conquers: which is better an MBA or a Law degree or having a bachelors from a top tier school?
I’m currently finishing up my undergrad from a no-name university in the bay area and have to compete with the top universities like stanford and berkeley. I have good grades and can compete but I’m afraid that people look at the university more then the student. So to combat this I figure I should join them – but in which way? Should I do another 2 years to get a second degree, or should I move onto my masters? and if so in which industry? I lean towards business but have a flare for law. Does any of this really matter? Could I real get an MBA or J.D from a state university and still compete?

I think that it only matters depending on what kind of future you want. You should go for what you believe in, not what others believe in for you.

Get the law degree. Look at it this way: have you ever heard a Law School graduate say they regret having gone? Can you saw the same for the other choices?
What is more impressive is where you get you JD or MBA. Aim high, the name of the university is all that really separates most JD and MBA programs.
If you are from a no-name university, don’t expect much attention when it comes to recruitment from the big firms.
I’m an MBA student so I might be a bit biased but I would recommend that you go for the MBA for a couple of reasons:
1) There is a huge glut of lawyers right now and unless you get into a prestigious law school, you may find it difficult to find a job that justifies the beaucoup bucks you shelled out for tuition. In my last job we actually had several law school graduates apply for an entry level position meant for a recent college grad with a bachelor’s degree. I straight out asked a couple of them why they were applying for the job if they had a law degree (three of them went to a no-name law school but two went to pretty good programs) and they told me that it was because they simply could not find jobs as lawyers because of how competitive the field is right now. On the flip side, an MBA from a decent if not great school will still open doors for you, and graduates of even just ok schools make comfortable salaries.
2) A law degree typically takes from three to four years to complete whereas an MBA usually takes about one to two years.
Despite what I just said though, if you feel like you have a passion for the law and its not just about the money, you should probably go for that law degree. Life is too short, do what you love.
