When should MBA start applying for federal job with a summer graduation date?
Question by nb392348: When should MBA start applying for federal job with a summer graduation date?
I’m at a business school that is on the trimester schedule and I’ll be technically finished at the end of June. My degree date however is August (the end of the second summer term). When should I start applying for jobs, I’m looking to relocate to Washington, DC. Specifically, I will be applying for a federal human resources/management position. How early should I start? How long does the federal job process take?

Start applying now for jobs for which you qualify. The process takes several months to complete. You’ll qualify for a GS-9 or equivalent pay band with a master’s degree and no specialized experience. At first glance, USAJobs has no HR specialist positions listed in Washington, D.C. at that level, so you may want to consider working elsewhere until you can qualify for the higher graded positions. I see that the VA has an announcement for an HR Specialist, GS-7 career intern position open in Philadelphia that closes today. (It will drop off the website at midnight tonight, so you’d need to fax or e-mail your info to get there today.)
Good luck. It’s a great job
