For top ones it’s the combination of
- score
- experience
- cover letter
If the experience and cover letter are at average with others, and there’s nothing outstanding, for top 5 you’d have to be above 780-790.
In the case of the schools you’ve mentioned, the average incoming class’ GMAT scores are around 700 and they have been rising slowly but steadily. While a mid to high 700 will put you a cut above the rest, no score can guarantee entry. So basically, a good GMAT score can’t necessarily get you into a top school, a bad one will most certainly get you eliminated.
It’s imperative to score well on the GMAT to get into a top school, but keep in mind they look at your essays and work experience as well. Having an unique application is the key to getting into a top program.
