My answer may not be the best, but it’s a start.
Ideally, you should aim for three things:
1. The job should be related to the career you want. Meaning, if you’re looking to go into management, get a job as a manager, supervisor or management trainee, or at least one where you can eventually be promoted to that position. If you want a job in banking, then work in a bank. If you want a job in finance, then get work in an investment company.
2. If you have a special industry interest, such as retail, medicine, or entertainment, work in that industry so you can learn it from the inside.
3. Pick a job where you can show your stuff, where you’re not just an interchangeable clone along with everyone else. You want to make a difference, turn something around, innovate, improve the bottom line, or make a qualitative difference in your job. You can pick one of two strategies here:
a. Pick a company, department, team or project that already has a good rep, is successful and share the glow. Find a weakness and improve it.
b. Pick something with problems and resolve those problems. The trick here is to pick a project you’ll be able to fix, not a sinking ship where the problems/fixes are beyond your control.
Unless you want a career in small business, pick a large corporation.
