Continuing ones education through a distance learning doctoral degree can be a great way for anyone with the motivation and an internet connection to pursue a higher education. There are multiple institutions offering these online degree programs in a variety of areas of study.
When a student decides to pursue a PhD online what can they expect to encounter from the experience?
There are a variety answers to that question but the first is probably the most important. Many people think that learning online at their own pace is an easy way to getting their advanced degree. The fact of the matter is that distance learning can be just as hard, if not harder then attending classes on campus. It takes a highly motivated individual who is able to learn on their own away from the typical classroom interaction found on most college campuses.
Students will find that online or distance learning courses are taught and handled differently then those on campus. In some ways the requirements are more stringent because of the need to maintain the accreditation needed to ensure the integrity of the program. This means the university and it staff are held to the same if not higher standards expected of their on campus programs.

Homework – Just like in any class homework will be required to be turned in. These can be papers, essays, reports and special projects depending on the class. Homework can be a big part of the students overall grade so it is important to understand and do well on all homework assignments.
Tests – In most cases all tests will be taken over the internet. In certain cases the student may be required to go to a testing center that is approved by the college or university.
Discussion Groups – Part of the college experience is interacting with other students to share ideas and opinions on class lectures and work. Many online PhD programs provide online discussion groups to help encourage this interaction. In many cases part of the student’s grade may be based on the amount of interaction they have in these discussion groups.
Interaction with Professors – This is probably one of the most important parts of any distance learning program. Students should have access to their professors in order to ask questions and get feedback on their school work. In most cases this is provided online, via the phone, or email. If a program does not offer this ability to interact with its professors it should probably be avoided.
Getting a distance learning doctoral degree can be a great way for people with jobs and families to earn that higher degree. Although it takes place in a different setting an online degree still has to be earned.
