Westwood College Hosts Gathering of Video Game Legends

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 5, 2009

According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predictions, the growth of software publishing, of which video game design is a part, will expand by 67.9 percent between 2002 and 2012, making it one of the fastest growing industries in the nation. To help future game leaders learn more about this cutting-edge industry, Westwood College (http://www.westwood.edu)] recently brought together ten of the interactive entertainment industry’s most accomplished professionals to share their experience on getting started in gaming, what they’ve learned along the way and to discuss the future of the gaming profession.

Each speaker touched on a different aspect on the gaming industry and its future including browser-based social networking games, digital comic book gaming and scriptwriting. Despite different areas of interests, all speakers agreed on the significance of flash-based online games.

“Because of its ease of use and ability to download quickly, Flash is the future of online gaming,” said Dave Perry, co-founder of Acclaim Games. “The gaming student who develops the next best thing in flash will surely be a success,” he added.

When asked how to get involved in the industry, gaming veteran and founder of WayForward, Voldi Way said , “To get your foot in the door you need a body of work to show prospective employers. There is no better way to build that book than through gaming competitions like the ones you’ll find at Westwood College.”

“Attendance at the Legends of Gaming event exceeded expectations, and the level at which people were engaged was very intense,” said Lou Osborn, Westwood Anaheim Campus President. “Current and future students of gaming realized they had a unique opportunity to gain valuable insight into how they can get started on a career path they are passionate about, and we were proud to provide the opportunity,” Osborn added.

More than 350 people attended the event at The Diamond Club at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday, Feb. 28. It was hosted by Westwood College’s gaming program, which offers two bachelor’s degrees in gaming – one in Game Art and another in Game Software Development. Approximately 18 percent of Westwood and Westwood Online students are enrolled in a gaming degree program, making it one of the College’s most popular programs.

The full lineup of speakers included: Brian Fargo, CEO of inXile entertainment; William Fisher, president and founder of Quicksilver Software, Inc.; Dave “Fargo” Kosak, co-founder of

GameSpy; Justin Lloyd, founder of Infinite Monkey Factory; David Perry, co-founder of Acclaim Games; Bill Roper, design director at Cryptic Studios; John Say, founder of Say Design; Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment; Voldi Way, founder of WayForward and Ru Weerasuriya, co-founder of Ready At Dawn Studios.
