I think these are logical assumptions of general business practices, but I don’t agree they are all completely relevant for tattooers. I am heavily inked, and I also have a MBA and multiple years of business experience, including currently owning my own profitable business. All of my siblings and most of my friends also have a large number of tattoos, so I asked their opinions before posting this as well.
The general consensus is that we don’t really need emails or consistent text messages from our tattoo shops. We don’t want to be “marketed” directly to our phones by our tattoo shops. Majority of us choose our tattoo shops base on relationships and loyalty. We don’t really search around the internet for a shop or need to be solicited to come in. I think it is more of an organic interaction. We find shops by getting referrals from friends we trust and generally once we have a tattoo artist in any given location we are generally pretty loyal. When we want to know whats going on at a shop we stop in. When the shop wants us to know something they have their ways.
Generally, people with on one or two tattoos go either spur of the moment or after intensive planning. They usually trust tattoo shops they have been referred to. Those who plan may look up shops they are given the names to, but that’s all I can see. I don’t believe someone in these categories would like to consistently be “marketed” either.
I don’t want to seem completely opposed, so I will state that I agree on the importance of social media and a distinct name can definitely help when you are being searched. Also, a professional site that is easy to navigate is a must. A low quality site is a warning sign for some people (even though it does not directly correlate to the quality of artistry).
