Thinking Mind: Innovation in Management Teaching
Often I have heard in management literature that there is nothing permanent in business except change. Change is all around be it in the seasons, be it in our physical and emotional state, be it our personality or be it in our standard of living. We like change in all things of our life right from mobile handset to automobile to any new appealing product, service and technology. We want change to get better results and performance. We like change in features, style and performance of market offering.
Another name of change is innovation. Innovation is different from invention. Invention is new discovery, whereas innovation is modification and adaptation in product, service or market offering. Two proverbs are famous in management literature first it is said that necessity is the mother of invention and second is business to survive must Innovate or perish. If you try to answer few leading questions about change and innovation, then you may realize the need for change in business and non business organizations.
Do you like change in product’s features, style, durability and performance?
Can you continue to use same old products and services indefinitely?
Do you like growth in your personality?
Do you like to upgrade your knowledge and improve your skills to have better career.
Innovation in teaching management subjects is not difficult. Innovation should make management teaching more enjoyable and effective. Some of the innovations in management teaching are as follows:
Teaching management subjects through case studies and role playing.
Citing the relevant examples of business situations while explaining management theories.
Arranging industrial trips.
Asking students to do project work which may take the form of product survey, visit to industrial unit and preparing report on the same.
Showing educational movies to students and asking them to identify managerial learning from such movies.
Encouraging students to be open minded and experiment by participating in various events and co-curricular activities like debate, elocution, business poster making etc.
Using latest technology like multimedia in teaching.
Management teaching is a demanding profession and requires lot of reading and preparation to deliver effective lecture, sufficient time must be provided for the same.
If such simple efforts are put honestly then the results will be great.
Innovation is a way to improvement and management teachers need to be innovative in their approach and teaching methodology. Innovation in teaching is need of hour. The efforts should be made to make managerial teaching more relevant, contemporary and to relate it with real business situations and business problems. Innovation is a way to betterment of product, service or market offering.
