The Secret to Bill Gates’ Success?

Wilkes-Barre, PA Bill Gates attended Harvard, dropped out, started a little software company called Microsoft, and became the richest man in the world. That much is known. What is being rumoured on many web sites is that there is a secret to Mr. Gates’ success: a nearly century-old book called The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel.
Rumour has it that while attending Harvard, Bill Gates found a copy of The Master Key System and read it voraciously. The book, which deals with how to attain wealth, health, and one’s goals, influenced young Mr. Gates to such an extent that he halted his education so that he could pursue his success in the burgeoning computer world. What is The Master Key System? Who is Charles F. Haanel? Is this true?
“I have no idea if it is true,” says Tony Michalski, publisher of The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel and the owner of Kallisti Publishing. “I first heard about Bill Gates reading The Master Key when people began calling me asking if it was true. It’s become quite a hot topic. Whether it’s true of not, the book contains the wisdom that a person needs to become wealthy and successful, like Bill Gates, but I have been unable to verify if he actually read it. I’d put money on it not being true, but it makes for an interesting urban legend.”
The Master Key System was first published in 1916 by Charles F. Haanel, a business man turned self-help guru who wrote a number of books about attaining self-mastery and success. It was published in mail-order format and in book form, possibly banned by the Church, and was the main source of inspiration for the self-help books that followed it, such as Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and the Magic of Believing by Claude M. Bristol.
Tony Michalski discovered the book on a friend’s dusty book shelf and when he could not find a new copy, decided to republish it. It has been a resounding success. “It’s amazing how many people contact me about this book. I have people who call and say that their parents read it to them when they were small. Wonderful stories. It’s great to see this author getting the recognition he deserves after lying dormant for so long.”
If Bill Gates didn’t read The Master Key System, then that wouldn’t upset Michalski. “I’d be happy to send him a copy of the book that supposedly influenced him,” he quips. “It doesn’t really matter if he read it or not. A lot of people are discovering it and hopefully a lot of positive changes are occurring in peoples’ lives. It’s a really powerful book. Truly wonderful.”
