Should I get Masters in Economics before getting MBA or not?

Question by smartyboy: Should I get Masters in Economics before getting MBA or not?
I have heard the phrase “out of all the applicants, people who get into business school are those who need MBA the least ” and I think this is somewhat true.

I currently am an undergrad student with major of management science. If I go to grad school for economics first, get better job than what i can get with bs degree, then apply to business school, will I have higher chance of getting into business school than working with bs degree and apply to business school without masters?

no, i don think so. get a job, work for several years, then apply. i think that having job experience is better for MBA than another degree.

Economics is a very important subject it will def help you later for your business studies

Not really. it won’t make a difference. If your goal is an MBA then I would recommend finding a job after ugrad. Work your ass off for a few years, and

    1) you may find that you don’t even need an MBA to progress in your career

    2) you will have the work experience necessary for a top MBA program.

    3) you might just have the money to pay for your MBA.

Graduate studies in economics are absolutely unnecessary for success in Business school. The work you will do in an MBA program is childs play compared to that in a masters econ program. The value of an MBA is not in the academics, but the networking and exit opportunities. Getting in to a good program requires solid work experience, and you will more than likely not need the econ degree to get that work experience.

“out of all the applicants, people who get into business school are those who need MBA the least ”

How so? The MBA is a degree program meant to help a person make huge career changes, or advance in their current careers. Out of all the applicants, those who get in are mainly people like engineers or other professionals, trying to get into finance, or just people who need an MBA to be considered for a promotion. Those who are not accepted are often times recent grads who don’t have work experience, and therefore the MBA would help them the least.

MBA want people who are going to be influential in business. Getting a masters in econ makes you seem more academic than practical, most MBA programs would prefer someone with 2-3 years of impressive work experience.
