Question by The Prince of All Saiyans: Is a master’s degree typically required as a prerequisite to a doctorate level program?
I know in my discipline, physics (well at least at my university), it isn’t, but what about other disciplines?
Ok, since I was a child I was always under the impression that you need a master’s before you can get a PhD.

Very rarely. Often it’s just a BA.

Depends, when I was applying some schools required a master’s but most didn’t. Everyone in my program has a master’s except for me.
Some programs offer an integrated course for Ph.D. and Master’s for students with Bachelor’s degrees. In such cases also it is not necessary to have a Master’s degree before Ph.D.
You can get a PhD without a masters. In the case of going directly to a PhD from a Bachelors degree, however, there may be extra course work or requirements placed on these students. This can add a year or so onto the overall PhD study time . This way the candidate earns a “masters equivalent” in the first year of study.
