Q&A: Is a J.D. from a Tier 1 school alone better than a J.D. from a Tier 4 and an MBA from a tier 1?
Question by Lee Hunt: Is a J.D. from a Tier 1 school alone better than a J.D. from a Tier 4 and an MBA from a tier 1?
I currently attend a Tier 4 law school (exceptional placing for a tier 1 in the city in which the school resides, however) that offers a joint degree with a neighboring University with a nationally recognized MBA program. I also have the opportunity to transfer to a Tier 1 law school within the same city, but the joint MBA with that university is not as sought after or as highly regarded, therefore I would not pay the extra money for a less desirable joint degree program.
If I want to go into some sort of business law (bankruptcy, in-house counsel, etc.) would a JD (tier 4) plus and MBA (tier 1) greater than, less than or equal to a JD (tier 1)?

Go with the tier 1 law school. There are so many people with lower-level law degrees right now and they end up on those commercials trying to sue people for asbestos and other crap.

Someone once said that the world is run by Cooley graduates. This may be true but the Tier 1 school will get you the better 1st job. If you are looking for a position with a law firm or a clerkship, then your law degree is the only thing that matters here.
If you want to practice law and use your business knowledge/MBA to aid your career, go for the tier one law school. Firms and/or corporations will hire you for your law degree if you’re going to be working as a lawyer, and the school that offered your MBA is not that important.
If you want to work in business and just have the legal knowledge as background, stick with the top business school.
Also keep in mind for the jobs you’re listing (in-house counsel, bankruptcy attorney) the MBA is unnecessary. It will certainly help for some positions, but counting on the strength of your MBA program for a job where the law degree is what matters is kind of silly.
Tier one law school all the way.
