There are a lot of different types of accreditation. What you want is a school that’s regionally accredited. Regional accreditation means that the degree will be seen as genuine by employers, and your coursework can transfer to other schools if it needs to.

First, look at the public/state colleges in your home state. Some of them do offer online degrees now, and they’ll be both reputable and your least expensive option.

If you can’t find what you need there, then look at the traditional, brick and mortar unis that also offer online degrees. Please avoid the proprietary/for profit/as seen on TV schools, as employers do not respect those degrees. So stick to the many online degrees offered by UMass Amherst, Florida State U, Northeastern U, Colorado State, U Denver, Regis U, Drexel, etc.

I think the previous answerer is correct. The ” for profit” schools such as Devry, Kaplan, Phoenix etc. are accredited; however that is not the issue. Most employers do not favor these colleges because they see them as “diploma mills” because they are out to make money.

As the previous answerer stated, there are PLENTY of traditional, non-profit colleges that offer online options for working students etc. The classes are the same as they would be if you were on campus, and you know the programs are worth while. Penn State, is one example that now offers online programs. You know a school like Penn State is not going to put their seal of approval on a program if it wasn’t “worthy”. Look into schools that are local to you, and see what their distant learning options are. Stay clear of the “for profit” schools; it’s not worth the risk in the end.
