I have heard that it is a bad idea to get your bachelors, masters and PHD from the same university. Is this true? If so why is it a bad idea? I got my bachelors and masters from the same university.

When you attend different schools and learn under different professors, you have more academic influences. When you complete all of your degrees in one school, you miss out on the opportunity to broaden your experience.

People say it is a bad idea because of the fact that you are receiving the same education over and over again. (The same ideas are covered in similar masters and undergradute courses) If you get your degrees from different colleges, you will be receiving seperate viewpoints on material. Depends on the degrees and what the college is (No one has an issue with too much Yale or Harvard! LOL), but to some extend it is true. Don’t worry though, you are already in a good standpoint if you have a masters and a bachelors degree. Good luck in the future.
It doesn’t much matter if you got them in different subject matters, but if you are sticking with the same discipline, you are supposed to be learning from as many different people, and in as many different ways, as possible. Doing all of your work at one place can be very limiting, because even if it is a large university with a lot of different faculty members, they were all hired within the same system, which tends to mean that they all value the same approaches to the field.

in short its a bad idea because you lesson your networking capabilities. If you are looking to work in academia you need to know people in order to obtain employment. Getting your degrees at different universities allows you the opportunity to meet the faculty of differing universities who usually end up on the counsel that decides if you should be hired or not.
I know a gal with all 3 degrees from one university, and is a dean at another university. So it just depends
