Question by S77: Do you need an MBA to get a good business job?
I go to Michigan State and i am a freshman right now and my mom is freaking out and telling me i have to go into a major that i can get a job right out of college like packaging or engineering. I however took chem in the fall and did horrible so i know the science path is not for me. And she says i wont get a good business job if i don’t get an MBA, is this true?
-right now i’m general management major, but i may change

you mother is incorrect in her suggestion…you should actually get some type of internship right now in the field that you hope to end up in…almost impossible getting a job with any type of degree with an internship of some kind

I disagree with your Mom. Advanced degrees help to be sure but, also make you over-qualified for entry level jobs. Many MBA programs will not accept applicants until they have at least two years of business experience anyway. Get a job with your undergrad, then pursue the MBA at night.
Otherwise, you’ve an MBA with no experience. You’re overqualified for the entry-level jobs and too inexperienced to get MBA “worthy,” jobs. That’s a rough Catch-22!
