Question by Allison Kanter: Chances of admission to a top 10 mba program?
hi everyone… I would like to do an mba in one of the top ten business schools but due to financial reasons I can only do that in a few years and I will be around 30 then… do you think that would be perceived as “too old”? I have a few examples of demonstrated leadership in a globally known company, worked in the community as a volunteer and have good academic record (3.57 G.P.A. / 760 GMAT). I was also a licensed athlete until last year. what do you think my chances of admission would be? could you give me some advice / do you have similar stories? thanks in advance!

Hardly: the average MBA student is about 28, with five years of work experience – and for most schools, more work experience is never a bad thing. Given your record, though, you’d probably be a good scholarship candidate, so you might want to investigate your options there if finances are the only thing holding you back. (Depending on how big your company is, they might also be willing to help pay for your schooling if you’ll come back to work for them afterward.)

Good advice from MM. With such a high GMAT score and your work experience, you are a good candidate. Explore MBA programs now. Consult the Official MBA Guide. It’s a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria.
