Q&A: Business Administration Degree Vs. Business Degree?

Question by LALALA LA: Business Administration Degree Vs. Business Degree?
I’m currently a Business administration student focusing on human resources management. I’ve been hearing stories from people with masters in business admin, and their degrees are so specific to a job that they’ve been saying that because the economy is so bad they can’t get jobs. I’m wondering now if I should just get a business degree instead? HEELLP MEE!! Ahg!! Please if you have a degree in those help me out.

Well that is a good question (I was in that same boat). Well I was going to do business and decided to go to nursing school for now (because RN are guaranteed a decent job) and then continue later (and maybe become a nurse manger after that). Now if you want to continue with Business try that, and maybe look into Law School. Its worth a shot. Always have a plan B and something substantial to fall back on.

To my understanding, BA and Business degrees pretty much offer you the same non-specific thing, if you are looking into specifics, some schools do offer them. For example at USC, you can major in Entrepreneurial or Finance as opposed to just BA degree.
During this kind of crisis though, I would recommend you getting a degree in accounting. Accounting is not as glamorous and doesn’t pay as much as finance related job such as i-banks/hedge funds/forex, but it’s stable and crisis resistant. Accounting is very specific and all companies need accountants no matter what.

Is your HR focus an actual concentration in the field, i.e. an official program at your college? If so, it will state on your degree and transcript that you have a business degree in HR. In this case, you are fine as long as HR employment is what you are after. HR is not the best paying business field but companies need HR people all the time, regardless of the state of the economy. It’s leaps and bounds better than marketing, or management, for example.
