Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) Distance Learning Master’s Program Turns School Teachers Into School Leaders

Bourbonnais, IL (PRWEB) March 15, 2007

Teachers who want to take their careers to the next level as school principals or administrators must develop a greater understanding of the kinds of real-world scenarios that await them in the field. Directing school improvement is one of the most challenging tasks of school leadership. Gone are the days when a principal’s job was viewed as merely managing a building. Today, successful school administrators are leaders for learning, equipped with the training and vision for implementing change.

The Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) Master of Arts in Education School Improvement Leadership distance-learning program was developed in collaboration with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) to give teachers the knowledge and confidence necessary to take a leadership role in their school, district or state. Teachers participate in, review and reflect upon the activities of an administrator they choose onsite, while they collaborate online with fellow educators on real school challenges. They develop the skills necessary to effectively lead school improvement efforts and become catalysts for positive change. Graduates may be eligible for Illinois Type 75 Administrative Certification, contingent upon passing the state test for educational leadership.

Integrated Curriculum

The Master of Arts Education School Improvement Leadership program consists of 33 credit hours that combine the most current research with practical application. Students in the program learn from some of the nation’s leading scholars and practitioners on DVD while working with fellow teachers on real-school challenges through online cohort groups. The online classroom plus multimedia approach provides the ideal setting for collaborating with other educators and learning from an integrated curriculum. Courses are designed to build upon one another, enabling participants to easily link theory to practice.

Many students will be able to complete the program in less than two years. During that time, they will develop a true understanding of what it takes to be a principal, assistant principal or other school administrator. They’ll grow as leaders, grounded in educational theory and empowered with the tools for leading reform in their learning communities.

ONU summer 2007 term starts June 25. The application deadline for the Master of Arts in Education School Improvement Leadership distance-learning program is May 4, 2007.
