Question by joett8tt: Need advice from mba people or people in the finance industry. Would I be able to go into Finance?
Hi.
I have a Bachelors in civil engineering and MS in engineering management. I also have 3 years experience in the oil and gas industry (a year on site and 2 years in business development/bidding).
I’m thinking about pursuing an MBA in a top univ so I would be able to go into finance. I know there’s a recession now but i’m hoping within a year or two things’ll be better. Would finance companies want to hire someone like me with no relevant experience? if yes, would i get paid a good salary?
Another option, which would be easier and less time consuming, is to either study for a CFA or do an MS in a financial engineering? would these options be regarded the same as having an mba given that i already have an MS in engineering management?
my final option would be to do an mba but stay in the energy/oil and gas industry. However, i’m not sure if the degree would be useful in this case.
It would be greatly appreciated if you can give me any useful advice
Thank you

An MBA and MSEMgt overlap to a significant extent. If you stay in your current industry, you don’t need an MBA. (You might get a doctorate in Enigneering/Industrial Management instead. There’s a consortium of universities offering that as part-time distance study).
If you get into a top tier MBA school, all bets are off and you reset your career at the moment of graduation. There’s no way to predict whether some Wall Street company needs a number-crunching MBA+Engineer at the very same moment you are available.
Incidentally, it appears you’ve neglected to get your PE license. Take care of that right away. It adds gravitas to your business card in higher levels of Management.
