Question by dafdaf2008: Music – Minor or Major?
I’m going to college next year and I’m so close to choosing my major I really don’t want to be “undecided”.
I want a business degree (i’m not sure which exactly) and I also want to continue learning music. I’m in band, choir, musical theatre and I’m always performing and singing somewhere…. it’s a part of who I am.
Now, I do have a strong interest in becoming an entrepeneur, learning about business and i love the mathematics behind it all… but I have a strong passion for music and I’d love to learn more about techniques etc so that I could not only use it professionally as I continue to perform around the world, but I’d like to be able to teach others later on in life……
What should I go for in college?
Should I major in business, minor in music?
Double major?
Do an accelerated program that’ll allow me to have a Bachelor of Music and Master of Business Administration after 5 years?
I feel like I’ve asked the WHOLE WORLD this question…

A music major takes a LOT of time between practicing and performances. I feel like the wisest and most practical choice for the real world would be to major in business, and minor in music. The accelerated five year option would be good too, except that I feel you will be unprepared in grad school for an MBA if you haven’t gotten the undergraduate degree in business, because realistically, that is what most people are doing recently, especially if you are in an accelerated program.
What do you think? Answer below!
First of all, check whether the university/college you’re going to allows a double degree. Or if it allows you to have a degree in business management and allow you to take electives in the arts (music). Some universities allow their students to have some liberal arts subjects. Talk to the school admissions officer and find out.
Second, if you want to go for an MBA, don’t do it directly after your bachelor’s degree. You’d benefit more if you actually had some real world business work experience before you enter B-school for your MBA. You’d be able to contribute more to class discussions based on your previous work experience. And you’d be able to appreciate the concepts/ideas being discussed in your MBA class if you had experienced working in a company.
Good luck!
