Question by lindz: Master’s degree in public health?
I am a recent graduate with a bachelors in accounting. I am thinking of going back to school to get a master’s degree in public health. I have an aptitude for numbers but also would like to help people and the community. I am interested in possibly going in to public health management/administration so that I can help people but also use my business background. I’m wondering if a Public Health degree is the way to go if, for example, I want to work in a hospital with more of a management position? Will my accounting degree and a public health degree be more of an advantage? Or could I still go in to health management with just an accounting degree?

I don’t know where you studied or where you plan to study but Rollins School of Public Health at Emory has an excellent program in PH. Cheack out their website.
I’m not sure about your accounting degree. I would advice you to speak with someone who works in a health related field or contact your school of interest.

Your accounting degree would be great . . . if public health had any money.
In all seriousness, I’m going to lay it on the line here, and let you mull things over:
Public health is in major trouble right now. It’s difficult to get a job, and the jobs you do get don’t pay well. Also, keep in mind that in public health very few people in the field actually have a masters or doctorate in public health. In Georgia, where Emory is located (as the other poster suggested), only 20% of the public health workforce has one of those degrees. The majority are RNs or LPNs, some MBAs or random BAs or BSs.
That being said, if you get the MPH, you would certainly stand out . . . but still would be paid less than you’re worth and might get passed over for someone with more experience. If you want to go into health management, get a healthcare administration degree. There is certainly potential for growth there. Honestly, if you were to rise high enough in hospital administration you would have a much better chance of helping people via policy development and budgeting than crunching numbers at the state public health department, realizing that you’re short AGAIN and you’ll have to cut program funding AGAIN and there is nothing you can do about it.
