Question by Tang Nga Man: Marketing + (International Business or Finance) Major?
Much as I would like to major in marketing & international business, I heard that since these majors are not on the technical end, its hard for employment? Thus Im also considering to double major in marketing & finance instead, but the thing is, Im really bad at math and all those calculating stuff. So what I want to know is, where I can really get with a marketing & ib major (e.g.jobs), and how good those 2 combinations actually are. Because if its marketing & finance, there doesnt seem to be much of a focus on a certain sector, unlike it would be with finance & accounting for example. I really cant decide so I would really like to also know if taking an mba in the future will actually render taking international business as a 2nd major to be useless. Thank you.
(Enrolment is tomorrow and Im overseas so I cant contact my uni’s career consultant)

That’s a hard question. Ok lets try and answer it.
If you are really as bad at maths as you say you are, I would certainly not do finance.
What you do not say is what kind of job you eventually hope to get. That’s important,as you must choose a job you would enjoy. So ok, anything to do with maths would not be good.
I do not agree with the comment you made re International business not being technical enough, from what I can see of this course , it looks pretty good to me.
One of the jobs therefore, if you took marketing and international business would be in international marketing. With a view to eventually becoming international marketing manager. This is a good and interesting job, and you get to travel.
Not being able to speak other languages, is not really a problem. From experience all of the people you will be speaking to in other countries at the level you will be be dealing at, will speak better english than you do. Which would not be hard as you are American. *Smile*
If I was you and wanted to speak a 2nd language, I would opt for Mandarin Chinese. I speak French and German, but in business I never use it as the people in France and Germany etc, prefer to speak English. This is not the same in China,, doing business in China can be a challenge, due to language.
As you can probably figure out by now, I have done a lot of marketing internationally, and by the way, its fun. There is never a dull moment. The job I did up to 1 year ago, well actually I owned the Company, was Market wine internationally from europe, USA, South Africa, Chile, Australia etc.
The Country I had problems with was China, due to not speaking the language. Luckily China have not figured out yet, how to make vast quantities of wine, but they are learning fast.
Regarding the MBA, I would worry about that in a few years time. I do not see it being beneficial. Spending an extra 2 years to get a Masters Degree But nearer the time someone will give you advice on that.
Ok that’s about it. Forgive some of my use of English terms, as I live in England, and we call some things by different names.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
