Is there an alternate route to teacher certification in New Jersey?

Question by bishopsjewels: Is there an alternate route to teacher certification in New Jersey?
I’m 39 years old, have a master’s in Marketing Research, BS in Business Admin., and an AA in Marketing. I’m looking to change careers and become a math and science public school teacher. At my age, starting from scratch would be well-nigh impossible.

What programs are there in New Jersey enabling people such as myself to expedite the process to certification, especially with concentrations in math and science?

I’m in Arizona so the laws could be different. Since you have a degree can you just take the teaching certificate exam?

Schools here have such a shortage of teachers that in the last 2 years I’ve have seen 2 different people come in to teach and had a degree but no certification and the principal applied for an emergency certification for them, they must they get their certificate in that year. There are lots of ways around it. Also most private schools do not require a certificate as long as you are qualified.

See the below link. Not sure where you live in NJ but Brookdale offers a program called New Pathways to teaching. It’s full of math and science people just like yourself.

Besides that there are many options out there for you. Visit the NJ dept. of ED website. Most of the info you need should be there.

My advice would be to do it. Normally I would tell you that most districts do not like to hire alternate route teachers. But that’s not the case for math and science which is highest in demand.

I myself went back to school to get another degree in health and Phys Ed. I decided against the alt. route because I knew I would have problems getting hired.

    Good luck!
