Is Hult International Business School a scam? Worth it or not?

Question by Ana: Is Hult International Business School a scam? Worth it or not?
I got a phone call from a 617 number with someone asking me if I’m still interested in their Digital Marketing masters program. I don’t recall even expressing interest in the first place, but I’ve looked at several masters programs… What do you think about this university? Worth the time or not?

Best answer:

Answer by RoaringMice
617- is the Boston area of Massachusetts, which is where Hult is located. It’s a for-profit school owned by Kaplan, but it’s appropriately accredited. Worth the time? What other schools are you considering?

This school appears to be good on paper, but as a current student it doesn’t deserve the rankings it deserves. For institutional school reviewers the IDEA of a one year MBA with students from all over the world in 5 campuses is great, but for the students it’s a rip off! What you don’t consider, especially in the united states until you look for a job here that you’re screwing yourself with a one year MBA that hult provides. It’s not a big name so forget about going to a consulting firm. With a 2 year program you can prepare yourself for getting a job. Learn from the people who are currently in the program, make connections with 2nd year students who are already finding themselves jobs. Career services tries but frankly for how much you pay it’s not enough and shouldn’t be enough. They didn’t know there was a hiring cycle for consultants. For major universities they have special relationships with corporations knowing that this is how many students they will get from this school. Hult does not have that, because they don’t have the reputation with employers. More than half of the people you will interview with will not know Hult. In the end you’ll end up saying to yourself…I’ve got my MBA now what? You’ve spent all this money and what did you get out of it? The school’s IT infrastructure is poor. You’ll wait for 10 minutes before you can print a document out. Most of the teachers cant teach. You have some students that can’t carry on a conversation because of the language barrier. I mean it should be mandatory that they speak english fluent before they let you in. Some of them got in with poor GMAT scores. They try to entice you with a scholarship but turns out everyone got the same scholarship. It takes a while for things to get done in this school. Forget about student organizations and getting involved because by module C when everyone is rotating to other campuses it basically dissolves. So you have to make new contacts each year and the school WILL NOT help you in this because they have no contacts themselves. If you can get into a school that has at least a name that people will recognize go for it. If you get an nod from Hult I would think twice and really think about it. Get to know the students there and see if it is the best fit for you. They did a survey to measure the MBAs overall satisfaction with the program and approx. 30% ONLY were satisfied. Imagine paying about 75000USD just to be 30% satisfied? My biggest mistake was this.

  2. The freshly release MBA raking but The Economist:
    • Within the BEST 30 business programs worldwide
    • #1 for percentage of salary increase post MBA
    • 82% of graduates in jobs 3 months after graduation
    • 80% of graduates finding jobs through careers services
    • Principal recruiters of graduates: Johnson & Johnson, Accenture, JP Morgan

Hi I am a current student at Hult. Ileane, at the risk of stating the very obvious as one can only infer from your posting, your experience with the school clearly has not been great. Without taking away on some of the frustration you seem to have had, I am wondering how a soft rating (with significant student’s/alumni input) that “The Economist” rating is,
could have come out with such a differing picture from yours with regards to overall satisfaction of students with the MBA program. The following “url” which points to the latest full Hult ranking details. “http://www.economist.com/node/21532057″. A cursory read of the methodology followed by The Economist “http://www.economist.com/whichmba/methodology” suggests that if the level of unhappiness was as high as you say, then Hult would not even sniff the top 100. To date, I have mostly come across truly outstanding faculty (and yes I have attended great schools and am confident in making this call). While I respect your right to hold the views you have on the school, I think pointing everyone to publicly available information and allowing them to make up their minds on the basis of that, would be fair and would not cloud issues.

Hi Pat, you surely have some contradictions to what Ileane had mentioned, but I also find the fact that you are too much carried away by rankings. Let me tel you something. Hult marketing is too good a strategy to attract students from around the world. The feel they give you considering the websites, the rankings and the brochures are definitely very presentable and professional, but also they are illusive. They tend to magnify the true dynamics of Hult while making the inferior part of it a faded topic. Students go for the kill, but so they realize they made a mistake. I am not writing off Hult completely. It does have its own unique advantages, but if the rankings were something to have a few shots of tequila, I would prefer to have a couple of pegs of rum and soak in silence. Money can buy everything. You are actually investing a lump-sum in marketing when you want to improve on your grades and attract students who does not even believe in getting in a top raked school with such low grades in GMAT. Unfortunately, corporates are not such lame victims in the market. They know what happens when and how. If rankings did make a difference, Hult graduates would not have had been through so many difficulties in getting into atleast some decent jobs in the market. Life is sometimes an illusion….all that glitters is not gold.

    ilean,

Just because you did not make the most of your experience and since you probably expected to just have things handed to you after receiving an MBA but only received a shit job does not make that the experience for everyone. Also, no where near a 75,000USD tuition… Your opinion should be respected but taken with a grain of salt. Work more on advancing yourself and not negatively affecting others.

    Luck in the future,
    Drew

hye i am planning on going for a one year MBA at Hult. these guys certainly seem desperate. They keep telephoning me like anything. But suveys show they are in the top 100 around the world.

  7. Al Capone

Tony, Ileane and wallof china are right. I was also a student and the only reason i found a job is because of my work experience and the fact that i went to many career fairs. Forget about career services at Hult, they will show u a bunch of silly powerpoints and tell u that u need to be on time for ur interviews or silly things like that. They are great at marketing their own school, professors are not bad, best classes are too short and classes that u wont never even care about such as business execution or other bs classes are way too long. some of the classes are not even graded and they wont even tell u til the last minute. from more than 40 companies that i talked with only one knew about Hult…. sad, sad, sad. Dont take me wrong, I dont hate the school, is good to learn from other cultures and be in such a diverse environment but at the same time there is a lot of bs from the school. it services is probably the worst along with career services, the students are usually cool and the staff is pretty cool except for financial services that wont help u unless theres an interest behind. overall is a decent school with a long way to go. i would not rate it as a top school though, definetely not.

Wallofchina, personally I do not think that rankings are the be all and end all. They all employ different methodologies (which they share) to come up with their top schools. I only spoke of rankings in the context of Ileana’s reference to survey results on student satisafaction. Be that as it may be, I think that it is incumbent on everyone who attends a b-school to undertake full research on the school that they plan to attend. If the kind of research you perform is the one that leads you to pick the wrong school for you, then you only have one person to blame. It would be wonderful if all it took was to simply pay a fee and be guaranteed a great job. I expect employers to see through whatever facade is placed in front of them, and pick only those people that they find value in. That value differs from company to company and person to person and hopefully we will all find someone who think we have something of value to offer. Hopefully everyone gets to see/experience a return, that is meaningful to them, on their “investment”.

  9. Hult sucks

Tony, Ilean, WallofChina, and Al Capone are correct. This school is a scam. They don’t care about the students. They don’t help you find a job. They take your money upfront and leave you out to dry. The MBA is worthless as no one has ever heard of them. And all they care about is promoting their brand. They lie about EVERYTHING when recruiting you: housing, financial aid and the return you will get on your investment when you graduate. It is an unsustainable scam and I am confident that the true nature of this school’s administration will be revealed for all future and prospective students. They do just enough to look good in the rankings. All show and no substance. Future students should stay away from this school.

  10. African Student

I paid for USD 150 for the application and now feel I have been answered by your comments above. True or not I dont think I will take the risk.
    Thanks guys

  11. bad hult

Thanks a lot you guys. I got a call too and these people do seem really desperate. They’re gonna call me again for a phone interview tomorrow, not sure what will I say but there’s no way I’m going to Hult. I have no idea how these people even got my number. Big big scam.

  12. Adam Student

Hult is a decent school. Not as good as they may seem, but not as bad as some people here try to make it look because they didn’t use their opportunities properly and landed in shit jobs. “Not all that glitters is gold” definitely sums it up for me. The London campus is in a great location though, and a lot of the students are cool. It’s fun, but not an elite school yet.

Can you please share any successful experiences with the university? What has changed about the university from 2011 to 2012? What kind of scholarships are they offering? How difficult is it to get it? Some of comments mentioned that this university is not well known, well, my question is in which countries it is not well known(UK,USA,China or AE)? Besides MBA, how are other master degrees like International Business? Do you find it a good opportunity for people who don’t live in these countries and want to enter the job market there?

  14. ABC

Its a crap B School led by Stephen Hodges. No brand value and career service is full of dumbos who will help you to make resumes and cover letter but have no connections in the industry. Few of such names are Sunil Baby, Chris Tester, Kelli (Dubai Campus), Caroline (Boston campus). I am a graduate of Hult and it was painful for me to get a job. Big time NO!!

  15. future Hult student

    Hello everybody,

At first I would like to mention that I will be a Hult MIB student at the London Campus beginning his master program this September.
But since I have not been, an actual Hult student, my position is pretty similar to those who are looking for a business-school and my statement can be considered objective.

What I really don’t understand about most of you guys/girls is why you rely on the opinions of a few people, who post their personal opinion in this thread, instead of establishing your own opinion. I have counted about 1o different members (positive and negative) which posted their opinion.
Hult offers 8 different programs in 5 different cities around the world. I don’t have the numbers but I think it is safe to assume an average program size of about 50 people (very conservative estimation). This gives roughly 2000 students which start every year. So using the opinions of only very FEW students in an totally ANONYMOUS forum is not the way a postgraduate students should handle this decision. (my personal opinion)

Nevertheless I am totally aware that finding a postgraduate B-School is quite challenging and the opinion of others a greatly appreciated. But seriously 10/2000 in an anonymous forum…..I was also contacted by Hult based on my GMAT results and I was not sure what to think about this university and if I should apply.

Therefore I started trying to figure out the university by myself (AND THIS IS WHAT I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST TO EVERYBODY ELSE):

    1. Of course I started by looking at the different rankings of well-respected Business Magazines/ blogs etc. (which is also the main usp of Hult) I personally would consider them quite objective since they have no intention to misrepresent (positively or negatively) Hult.
Unfortunately these are not always reliable. Some use very very “interesting” techniques in calculating the ranking. (see the changes between in the ranking year 2010 to 2011 of the economist). Some others rely on data, like percentage of employment and salary, which are provided by Hult or Hult Alumni. I wouldn’t trust these data.

2.What you can do, which is by the way very reliable, is to take a look at the accreditations by the different governmental institutions . They have to meet certain criteria which are not provided by Hult. And since Hult is accredit in all most of the relevant institutions it cannot be a scam. http://www.hult.edu/en/about-hult/accreditations/

3.Another issue is the faculty fortunately we are living in the 21th century and everybody has internet and Google. So I started to check out the staff (every single one!!!), I checked their publications, if they really were also Professors at Harvard, Wharton, Cambridge, member of the Greece financial advisory board etc.

I did not find a single faculty member which did not meet the description provided by Hult.

And they are all really impressive chairman of the ECEB, CEOs, deputy GMs, CFOs, members of various consultant boards and as mentioned Harvard, Cambridge etc. professors.

Almost all of them work part time at Hult which I do not consider a disadvantage but this is just common practice. If you don’t believe me feel free to check again.
    http://www.hult.edu/en/about-hult/meet-our-people/faculty-team/

This was one of the main reasons for me to apply at Hult (and not the reason of some angry student).

4.And last but not least I attended one of the open house days in London.
I did this mainly because I have read in another forum that the pictures of the Dubai campus do not represent reality.

I visited the campus, both the old and the brand new one. And I can ensure everybody, the location is real it is really great. The house is beautiful and especially the new campus is amazing.
Again if you don’t believe me feel free to check yourself.
Next open house day is, as far as I know, at the 15.or 16. June.
I also talked to several current and former students. And they answered all my questions in detail and did not seem to be set up by Hult, they even talked extensively about several disadvantages. I also met a couple of perspective students, who I stayed in contact with, who applied but unfortunately at the end did not get accepted. Just to inform you that not everybody gets accepted.

I can just again strongly encourage you do not trust the statements in this/any other forum but establish your own opinion.

I am sure Hult is not the gold standard but it is definitely a good and decent university and far far far away from a scam.

    Best Regards

And Mr. ABC if you expect to be handed over a job after graduation you should not join a Business-School but should rather join a fraternity.
