Is business school (MBA program) math intensive? What can I expect in MBA classes?

Question by L: Is business school (MBA program) math intensive? What can I expect in MBA classes?
I’m currently a Master of Arts in Public Policy student at SUNY Stony Brook and just found out about a joint MAPP/MBA program that my school offers. I don’t know much about Bus. school (next to nothing actually ) and I’ve never taken a Bus. class in Ugrad. Please tell me as much as you can/know about what I can expect in MBA classes. Thanks :]

Depends on the MBA school. Some have a reputation of being very math-intensive (eg Chicago). Others are “soft” analytical. Most will require a minimum math background — either calculus or pre-calculus.

No, the general core is not math intensive at all. However, if you don’t come from a science/math background it can still seem daunting. You’ll experience most of the math in some sort of business econ course you’ll have to take, along with business stats. Stats tends to catch students off-guard if they haven’t had prior exposure.

Aside from that, there may math intensive electives, such as various quantitative analysis courses you can take. But these are optional and better suited for those who have prior extensive math exposure.

Some programs are more math intensive than others, but in general few go beyond simple algebra. There may be some calculus used in production or finance courses in some schools. There is a web site in which MBA program administrators report on a sliding scale how math-intensive their program is, how computer-intensive it is, whether the program is more lecture or case-oriented, etc. Schools report a lot of other data about their MBA programs and all the data are official, as reported by school administrators and not modified or edited in the web site. The site includes all the AACSB accredited MBA programs so you can compare a lot of good schools’ math-orientations. See the reference below.

Agreed with the above comment, it depends on the MBA school. Some are very math-intensive & some with “soft” analytical. Minimum math background of calculus is required, I guess.
