Question by rob y: I need MBA Assistance?
I’m a 17 year old high school student who will be graduating in January when I’ll be attending community college. I plan on studying Business Administration and I hope to transfer to a good four year school like Syracuse to continue my Bachelors Degree. My plan is to do well in those four years of school and then pursue a J.D./M.B.A. program at a top tier school like Harvard or University of Pennsylvania. I’ve been told that it’s not a good idea to study business for your bachelors if you want to get into a god MBA school.
This seems very confusing and I’m not sure if I can rely on what this person said. My passion is business and I’m good at it, so why not get a bachelors in business and get good grades and then go for my masters? Why would I go to school for economics or something random just because it’s been rumored that MBA programs are favorable to those degrees than business majors?
Can I go to school for business and get my bachelors and get into a top tier MBA program?

I’ve never heard that before. A business degree would be desirable for an MBA. Where my son goes to college you have to major in Econ. or Marketing, those are the only options, so it depends on what school you attend

The MBA was originally designed for people who didn’t have an undergraduate degree in business. Thus it used to be the case that MBA programs didn’t favor those with an undergrad degree in business. That’s no longer the case.
However, a lot of the most elite unis in the US don’t offer business as a major. You major in something else, work for a bit, then get your MBA.
Something like 20-25% of the students in MBA programs did business as their major for their bachelors degree. But it would make the most sense for you not to repeat your concentration – if, for example, you get your bachelors in accounting, don’t do your MBA with a concentration in accounting.
It’s not that your friend is wrong. His info is just old. And it’s not even that old – as recently as the 1980s, what he said was true.
