I’m a marketing director. . . have been one at a major toy company and a couple of technology companies (Microsoft and Google). Depending on the company, a marketing director typically works on developing the brand strategy for a product or line of products, manages the go-to-market or marketing aspect (advertising, PR, etc) and is usually responsible for managing a team of people. Many marketing directors have an MBA (PhD is probably overkill) but even an MBA isn’t really necessary. At a minimum you must have a BA. Having the right experience, both functional and industry, is more important than an advanced degree. Hope that helps.
1. Good to have a goal
2. You have not talked about marketing specialist, marketing manger, product marketing manager, senior marketing manager. . . these are the steps before director. In short, a director is responsible for a whole department. Since you use Disney as an example, it may mean running a whole group of the 4P’s. Primary this position is responsible for revenue and or profit and loss along with promotion, advertisement etc.
3. Salary runs between $65,000 to $120,000 a year depends on experience.
4. MBA is helpful. Ph. D is for research and/or teaching.
A master of science degree is for advanced study in the field of your undergraduate major or a closely related field. It leads to a high level staff position. An MBA is a terminal degree training students for high level management positions in any area of a business up to CEO. A Ph. D. is a terminal teaching and research degree preparing students for an academic career or a research position in government of industry.
The MBA may help you to achieve your goal faster, but you still have to work your way up. You don’t get the degree and jump into a marketing director position.
Before you decide on an MBA program explore the Internet for information on available programs. There is a lot of information available in free public service sites. Some sites are limited to specific countries, such as Germany, UK, or Australia. Some list a small number of select schools, while others may include more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. You can find the program that best fits you. You can search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc. ), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc. ), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by type of degree (MBA, MS, Ph. D). In some cases you can select your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs.
You can find data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees such as MBA/JD, and much more. Some sites have links to the schools’ web sites, or provide email addresses to contact schools of your choice, and send them pre-applications. You can find lists of top schools ranked by various periodicals or ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. Generally you should stay away from any sites that require you to pay to get information or that promise to find scholarships for you or ensure acceptance into a program. Before you provide any personal information to a site, be sure to read their privacy policy and make sure they are not harvesting email addresses for sale.
