Snook makes some great points. I would venture that no single answer is right nor wrong, but we’re seeing a movement towards charismatic, emotional, empathic, communication and transformational leadership, this in comparison (generally) to the leaders who operate on principals, systems, directiveness, goal-minded and straightforward leadership.
We’re facing leadership that appeals to Gen Y that replaces “tough” with “tech” and wants life more comfortable. Leaders who can conform will lead

Do all Harvard professors own (or run) very successful businesses on a personal / professional basis?!

If not – it should be made a prerequisite.

    Proof is in the pudding.

In any event – there was some good advice to be gathered in this particular vid.

also, I don’t think that any of the speakers really lacks any of the traits in the entire video, they just consciously take note of a specific thing more prominently

  5. noobler9

sorry, rather I mean, what is required to* make a good leader

  6. noobler9

this video needs to have a disclaimer, “what makes a good leader? all of the above”

I don’t believe, that only one single skill, taken out of the context of the others, can make a good leader. Can’t imagine a good leader full of empathy, who is not goal-orientated and mindful etc. I think it is about an inside and an outside balance: the skills you have, the skills you have/want to earn and how do you mobilize them.

not surprising, that call for empathy came from a woman, and call for goal-orientedness game from men

@observer855 Bill George used to be the CEO of Medtronic….he has leadership experience – not familiar with the other speakers though.

Ha! Amazing that they didn’t feature a single actual leader in this video! Want to know what matters in leadership? How about asking some leaders?

Instead we get a bunch of academics and HR reps. This typifies the attitude of most MBA program administrators and explains why HBS and other business schools no longer attract the truly gifted business minds of the decade. Hilarious, but also a bit sad.

I think there’s nothing futuristic about the skills mentioned nor I share cruciality of a skill you need tomorrow that could be of no use today. So…
I think the crucial skill of a leader is the one that gets things done by leadership. As dumb as it sounds, but yes.

transparent is must for the future leadership, including skill and good vision.

    Excellent,informative & Interesting.

Leaders should be good listeners then decisive.

“Trust”, absolutely. “Character”, yes-generally. “Empathy”, spot on, “Capacity”, absolutely. “Devotion to others”, maybe (a bit overly sentimental). “Why?”, okay. “Curiosity,” ok. “Mindfulness,” a bit vague and undeveloped. Perhaps a study of Zen would help. “Calling,” let us not forget profit to escape student debt slavery. So, a bit sentimental.

    Great video
