High science GPA, lower cumulative, any shot at Med School?

Question by Daniel R: High science GPA, lower cumulative, any shot at Med School?
I have graduated from my undergrad with a very bad GPA, around a 2.3. Basically I just showed up because college seemed like the right thing to do. After a few years of working in medical sales, I am going back to school with the hopes of going to medical school.

Now before you laugh and tell me I am dreaming, here is the silver lining to my otherwise hopeless undergrad. I will complete my MBA in the spring with a 3.75-3.9 depending on my last few classes. I am currently taking premed science courses and will have close to a 4.0 science gpa in when I finish. I scored well on the SAT (1360) and the GMAT (690), and will study hard in hopes of scoring well on the MCAT. I’m also volunteering at a practice, a nursing home, and tutoring at a middle school. Do I have a chance at med school (even the Carribean or Eastern Europe) if I am able to score in the mid 30′s or better on the MCAT? I’m wondering if anyone out there has been in a similar position.

1360 is a good score?! oh my god, everyone at my high school gets 2000+ score on the SAT, unless you took the old SAT which is out of 1800?

….welll goood luck, never give up hope

Unfortunately, the high number of applications results in US medical schools focusing on just the undergraduate overall GPA, the prereq GPA and the MCAT score. You’d have to score in the 40′s on the MCAT to cause a US med school to look twice at your application to see why the disparity between your 2.3 GPA and MCAT score. Then they might take into consideration your obvious improvement in the graduate work. But if you score in the 30′s on the MCAT, I don’t think you’ll make ith through the first cull. But that shouldn’t stop you from applying. You never know when your application will catch someone’s eye.

As for Caribbean schools–there’s only four worth applying to and you look like a strong candidate for any of them. I recommend only considering those schools that qualify for federal student loans. Those schools are well respected in the US. Another suggestion is to visit the admission office of the school you select to hand deliver your application. Somebody will talk with you and that gives you an edge.
