Question by John: Do most graduate schools usually accept Ph.D. applicants than master’s degree applicants?
Do most prefer the Ph.D. applicants over the master’s degree applicants even though both had the almost the same GPA and GRE scores? Science programs like biology and chemistry, not the MBA or Education.
I’m thinking about big schools like University of Illinois, University of Penn, University of Michigan, Ohio State, etc.

Yes, they do prefer PhD applicants (unless they don’t offer a PhD in that field) – the ranking of the school in the graduate program depends on how many PhD students they graduate per year, so they don’t want to waste their time and funding on people who will just leave after two years. If you just want to do the masters, either apply to a masters-only program (there are some out there) or apply as a PhD student and leave with the masters (this is pretty common).

They may like to have more Ph.D.’s. However, the requirements to get into a masters program are usually much less. So, you will have a better chance of getting in if you are applying for a masters program.
