Question by Jason E: Do I have to have a masters degree to be undergraduate academic advisor?
I am going to complete my MBA in about a year. I am interested in using it to have a career in a university setting. Obviously, I can teach, but does one have to have a masters degree in order to be an undergraduate academic advisor at a univ? Just to clarify, I am not talking about a mental health type of job. I’m referring to the people who meet with students and help them through planning their courses etc.

All the advisers I’ve spoken to my school either are current master’s students, studying something within the college they work for, or did study that subject previously. So it would be best to have or be working on your master’s, but it may not be necessary.

Strictly speaking no. You generally just need some teaching experience and your MBA will be sufficient for that. However, especially at the college level, getting a Masters in counseling will be a great advantage. If I was interested in that sort of thing I would do a councilling Masters.
Thanks
Bill
You need a Masters in Education Degree with an emphasis in Pupil Personnel Services or a Masters in Education with a concentration on counseling.
