Chris Judd – AFL Player

He did his high school at the Caufield Grammar school where he was acclaimed to be to be very versatile performing in different sports. He later focused on Australian Rules Football where he was captain of the school first team. He currently weighs about 87kg and he is about 1.89 metres tall. He plays in the midfield position and made his debut in the AFL in the second round of 2002 against Collinwood. He was drafted in the National draft of 2001 with selection number 3 by the West Coast Eagles.

Early Professional Career

Chris played for Sandringham in the Victoria Football League as a bottom age margin recruit. He participated in the Under 18 championships in the year 2000 after graduating from AIS/AFL Academy. He had exhibited certain skills and abilities to make him eligible to play in the AFL but he was below the requisite age of 18 years, so he could not be drafted that year. His performances at the state level attracted many scouts who looked forward to picking him during the draft. He was eventually picked by West Coast Eagles as selection number 3 in the 2001 AFL draft. He has been able to stand out among all the players that were drafted that year which has been often referred to as ‘Super draft’.

AFL Professional Career

Judd made his debut in the AFL in the second round of 2002 season where he had a remarkable season that earned him the AFLPA Best First Year Player Award. He continued with his remarkable performances such that he had a very eventful season in 2003. At the end of the season he had 29 goals to his credit and came second in that year’s Best and Fairest Awards. He was also appointed vice-captain before the 2004 season began. The season of 2004 was a very exciting and impressive one for Judd. He was named for the first time to be part of the All Australian team and also won the club’s champion award for the first time too. He also became the first player to win the highly coveted Brownlow medal from West Coast Eagles.

Chris kept a good performance record carrying it into the 2005 season. The club made it to the grand finals that year but missed the title to Sydney by only four points. He however, was able to get some honours and awards for that game and during that season. He was awarded the Norm Smith medal as the best player on the field during the grand final match. He also kicked the Goal of the Year for that season. He had another exciting season in 2006 that culminated in his winning the Best and Fairest awards the second time, second selection for the All Australian Team selection, AFL’s most valuable player and was also named the team’s captain that year. He later captained his club to a grand final victory against Sydney making them AFL Premiership champions.

During the 2007 season, he was plagued with a lot of injuries that saw him in and out of play several times. He later left West Coast Eagles to join Carlton Blues in a move that attracted a lot of media attention. He was made the captain of Carlton Blues the very year he started playing for them and has had a good stay at the new club so far. He is studying for a Masters in Business Administration now, he got married in December 2010 to Rebecca Twigley a speech pathologist and they are expecting a baby in August 2011.
