Question by Miss 6: Where can I find a masters degree program that’s not tied into a doctoral program?
I’m graduating with a degree in Anthropology I was looking into Brown and U of Chicago because I know they have a strong department in Egyptology but their graduate program is tied to their doctoral and right now I’m just interested in a masters degree. Thanks

You could always just enter the doctorate program and leave after completing the masters. Many students do this, either having planned it ahead of time or deciding to stop after the masters. Don’t go to a second-rate program if you could do this instead.

My best recommendation would be to contact a number of colleges to find the best fit for you and your needs (tuition, schedule, career opportunities, etc.). Too often people enroll in the first school they find rather than taking the time to find the best school for them. Taking that time now could save you a lot of time, money and frustration if you choose the wrong school.

I haven’t completed an online degree program, but I have taken some of my classes online. The classes I took did require supervised tests, but there are degree programs out there that don’t. Fort Hays State University offers completely online degrees. If earning a degree online is something you are thinking about, I’d go with them. They are cheap, about what you’d pay for a local university or community college, and I’ve read really good reviews about them. www.fhsu.edu/virtualcollege/degrees/index.htm
There are also other universities that offer online degrees. Do a Google search for something like “online learning site:.edu” or “distance education site:.edu”

I have heard a lot of bad things about the private online schools that advertise (University of Phoenix, Kaplan, DeVry, etc). It might be best to stay away from them. They are in most cases accredited, but often times their admission processes are a bit shady, they are overpriced, and some people question the quality of education you receive.

Southern New Hampshire has quite a few online degrees.
Boston University, Seton Hall do too as well. If price is a concern I would advise you to take a look at St. Joseph’s College in Maine their programs are the cheapest of the 4.

I will graduate in december with a degree in philosophy, but i recently decided i want to work in school counseling. Do you think there is any chance i can get into a program like that without going back for a second bachelors in a more closely related field?

You are no doubt missing many prerequisite courses necessary for application. If you know what program you are going to apply to, read the list of requirements. You won’t need to get a second bachelor’s, but you will have to take some courses as a post-grad. They will assume you have this knowledge and built upon it in graduate school. You will also need to take the GREs. You can do it, will just take a few semesters. Good luck! ( psychology professor)
