Question by Free the monkey in you!: Can I take the GRE instead of the GMAT for Business School?
I am confused… some people told me I need to take the GMAT to get into the MBA program but one of my professors said I could just take the GRE… can someone help me clear this up? I think the difference is that the GMAT is required for the MBA but only the GRE for other Master’s programs like Finance, Accounting, or Economics.

Check with the schools that you want to apply to, but I’ve never heard of any business school that didn’t require the GMAT.

My brother-in-law was going to take the GMAT (to get into the school where he is getting his MBA), but was told he didn’t need to. He is taking on-line courses with one of the Colorado universities. He already has a masters in some poly sci area, so maybe that was the difference.
Unless you were talking to your professor about a specific program at a particular university, he was wrong. Most business schools require the GMAT. There may be occasional programs with alternate requirements, but you can’t just take something else and assume that it will be accepted for any program or at any university. Once in a while a school will make an exception for someone who has difficulty doing what they are asking for. For example, I had taken the GMAT and the LSAT, and one of the schools I applied to for my Ph.D. in business asked for the GRE. I was out of the country at the time and didn’t have access to a testing location, and I threw myself at their mercy and asked them to accept the scores I already had. They did. However, that is more likely for a Ph.D. program, in which they deal with a few individuals, than it would be for an MBA program, which admits hundreds at a time. Also, because of on-line testing and the ability to take the tests on your own schedule, they would be less flexible with those who don’t have the right test – it is too easy to just take another test.
You must take the GMAT and not the GRE for virtually any reputable MBA program. Don’t listen to anyone that tells you otherwise.
Some schools don’t require any test but those schools are a joke – waste of your time and money.
It depends on the business school you are applying to, but most of the more reputable ones would require a GMAT score. In the end, if you are sure that you are applying to business school, it’s better to take the GMAT. It’s the most widely accepted test for all business schools.
