Question by Eric L: Becoming a finacial advisor vs. getting MBA vs. Joining coperate america??
I am currently a senior in college (finance major) have a 3.8 GPA and interning and a large aeronautical/ defense company working with quality services and cost improvement plans. It’s decent, but I feel that I am too much of a maverick to conform to corporate America forever. I am also thinking about jumping right into an MBA program, I heard its easy to get a full ride if you do good on the GMAT. I am also engaged and 26, I did sometime in the Military and I’m ready to start a life already. We plan on moving to a smaller beach town in Florida where we are from, when I’m done with school , so there won’t be many large scale corporate opportunities. I am really attracted to the idea of becoming a financial adviser because from what I understand it is an independent type job and I like the idea of helping people on a personal basis. I have an entrepreneurial spirit and I think this career choice will suffice. Any advice on what I should do based on my situation would be appreciated.
I do understand the current condition of the economy could hinder some people from jumping into the market right now, but also very much inspire people to jump in because there are very many bargain buys right now. I have an advantage as far as start-up clientèle goes in the area I plan to move back to because I managed the two biggest nightclubs in the area and know a lot of young people in town that have money and don’t know what to do with it. I think people from the outside looking in automatically associate a financial degree with being forced to work on Wall Street and in big business when in actuality a large portion of the USA’s GDP consists of small business. We all cannot deny the sexiness of the American dream; entrepreneurship, venture capitalism that is what really gets my blood flowing. I hope to one day have a portfolio of regional businesses, who knows one of them might go public. I have to start somewhere….

Well I don’t know if being a Finance major is for you if you don’t want to conform to corporate America. You are really cutting down your options there.
If you graduated from a good school and you are good at what you do, then I’m sure you can make a fortune for yourself. But most people aren’t that awesome. You might have to sacrifice a little, specially at a crucial time like this, with people from all over the world competing on a leveled field.
