Advantages and Disadvantages of Distance Learning

Many universities and learning institutions today offer online distance learning degree programs. More and more students enroll in various online courses each year to take advantage of the many benefits that online schooling has to offer. Nevertheless, before making a decision, a person also has to weigh the disadvantages associated with online education. Let us talk about these two aspects of distance learning online.

Advantages of Distance Learning

Flexibility. Many students choose to study online primarily because of the flexibility that the program has to offer. A student can choose the exact schedule of classes that fits with his/her lifestyle. This is particularly beneficial for students who need to work at the same time. Even graduates who are already employed in a company can earn a higher degree or take up master’s education while working.

Cheaper cost. Studying online is generally cheaper than traditional schooling. First, there is no need to travel to and from school so a student can save from transportation costs. There is also no need to rent a dorm or an apartment closest to the school to enjoy convenience and minimize expenses.

Short degree programs. Online institutes offer a wide range of programs such as Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, Associate’s Degree, and even short term courses or vocational courses. A student does not need to enroll in a long term course immediately. A student can take up one short course at a time to upgrade diploma or enhance skills.

Easy access to course materials and learning aids. Course materials and references can be used for free from the website so at as student can conduct researches at any time.

Access to the school you want. Distance does not need to be a barrier so a student can choose a reputable online school regardless of the geographical location.

Disadvantages of Distance Learning

Self-motivation is a must. In order to truly benefit from online learning, motivation is a must. A student has to be determined to make an effort to learn. A student has to be honest in answering quizzes and examinations, must actively participate in online class discussions, avoid missing classes, and must take the extra time to do personal research before or after each class. If the student becomes lazy or does not have the initiative to learn, then studying online may not an effective method of learning.

Lack of human interaction. In a traditional classroom setting, a student can greatly improve socialization and self-confidence. Studying online may be different. Since classes are conducted over the internet, communications will take place through chat message, message boards, or video and teleconferences. Of course, it is a different kind of interaction from a traditional class. If the student has a problem with communications or with social skills, he/she may choose to go to a regular school to recover from extreme shyness.

Technical courses may be a challenge. Some course, especially those that involve technical skills training may be better taken up in a conventional school. Before deciding if online distance learning is right for you, carefully consider the type of education program that you want to pursue.
