Question by V & C 15: A bachelor’s in psychology and marketing to get a MBA?
O.k so Im 24 years old and I have got 2 years of college done. I could not pick a degree to pursue! Im really interested in people, helping people, why people do things that they do, etc. So I think psychology would be a good pick for that part of me. ( im really a humanitarian at heart!) However business interests me also ( we own a family business) but not the administration part. Also accounting is a negative, I really didnt care for my accounting classes. I know that just a bachelor’s in marketing or just a bachelors in psychology will not get me far but they do interest me, so thats why I would eventually get my masters. Are these good degrees for getting a MBA. Pretty much every degree now the only way to go really far is to have a masters anyways, so Im not afraid of work. Im very driven when I have a goal to work for. Should I major in Psychology and miinor in marketing? Or should I get a degree in both? Also if I changed my mind and instead of going for my MBA but wanted to apply for law school would these degrees work for that? My ultimate goal is to do something to help people. I cant do blood so nothing medical, but I thought with this degree I could work for a non profit or something? What do you think? Any advice is great! No rude answers please!

Do something you are good at and enjoy. You cannot help other people, as altruistic as that sounds, without first taking care of yourself.

With an MBA it doesn’t matter what your undergraduate degree is in. If it is in Business you will just be able to complete it quicker as you will have less prerequisites to make up. As long as you have Principles of Management, Principle of Marketing, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Micro and Macro Economics, calculus and statistics you can have any major. Most MBA s will admit you without these course and then charge you graduate tuition to take what are really undergraduate courses. Most MBA s are very analytical and you should consider a full year of calculus and a full year of statistics a good idea.
Now to answer the other question that you did not ask, a degree in marketing is very marketable. (I agree that you need to go to graduate school for psychology.) If you go to a good college you should be able to get a good job with the marketing degree. If you are really good with people and have a marketing degree, don’t discount a career in sales. There is good money in sales (not retail). Most people working in ad agencies, sales, purchasing, etc do not have an MBA. The MBA makes it easier to move into management but can be earned latter.
Your assumption on needing a master’s for anything these days is incorrect. Master’s degree can actually make you overqualified and unhireable for entry level positions. However, it also makes you underqualified for any type of higher position. There is too much brainwashing going on with educational institutions (remember they are a business too) that make it seem like you need all so much education just to get a job. Not true. A bachelor’s degree is sufficient for anything aside from fields that require licensing procedures with fixed degrees in mind (i.e medical fields).
