EABS hosted the Junior World Entrepreneurship Forum in Pune on the 4th and 5th of September 2010. A forum founded by KPMG and EMLYON Business School (France) is a platform that provides burgeoning entrepreneurs with the platform to showcase their potentials and at the same time get an opportunity to hear about success stories from entrepreneurs who have been there, done that. The forum is also haloed by the patronage of Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of France. More than 20 successful entrepreneurs gathered at EABS for the event and gave Pune an opportunity to be the first Indian city to host the event.
The event spanning two days starting Friday the 4th of September was bifurcated into two sessions on each day. The first session on Friday zeroed on the theme “Entrepreneurship at the Bottom of the Pyramid”. A succession of authoritative addresses by Mr. Sanjay Jha, Founder CricketNext.com & Dr Ganesh Natarajan, CEO Zensar Technologies instigated the event with a touch of grandeur. They both gave allude to their respective career paths and shared episodes of failures and achievements which made them what they are today. Mr. Jha went on to say that “the man you see in the mirror is the biggest differentiator in life” and emphasized on the importance of being a failure to be acquainted with success. Dr. Natarajan got the audience on the edge of their seats with some remarkable insights about the fortitude of an entrepreneur. This session gave way to ‘The Bottom of the Pyramid’ panel discussion moderated by Mr. Sanjay Jha and including Sanjeev Rao, an INSEAD alumnus & Founder of G2I Ventures, Bhaskar Babu, CEO Sarvoday Microfinance, Xavier Bertrand, CEO of Chanel India & Trustee Planet Finance, and Anil Dhankar CEO of Huntsman and Barons as the other panel members. It was a very entrancing experience for the students of EABS who were made conscious about the opportunities that stretch out in the societal strata, the challenges and the corridor to succeed. Mr. Xavier Bertrand opined “the aspiration of youth has the power to transform the world”. Mr. Bhaskar Babu pointed at the significance and functioning of microfinance and also quoted “I do not want to get richer by making Mukesh Ambani poorer. I wantto get the bottom of the pyramid to come close to the top.”
The next session of the day was Enterprise Spirit: Live Case Studies – What DNA Entrepreneurs posses. This was a discussion for burgeoning entrepreneurs to share their stories and a platform for them as well as the students of EABS to know how certain ideas mushroomed in them and the way these ideas matured. The panel consisted of Janardhan Prasad and Mukesh Jha founders of ‘Dial an Auto’ which as the name suggests makes the mini Indian taxi just a phone call away. It also had Mr. More the owner of ‘Amir Chicken and Eggs’ the largest chain of chicken shops in Pune sharing his experiences of starting off his business and succeeding in a short span of time. The panel was headed by Mr. Shiva the MD of Paperclip which is an organization unique in the fact and as Mr. Shiva said “teaches creativity”. He was a captivating orator and left many a member in the audience gasping with splinters of thoughts that he shot at them. The day ended with a grueling round of questions from the audience to the panel members and vibes of the following day being a success was already being felt.
‘Exploiting the Potential of Entrepreneurial Cities’ was the theme to kick start the next day and included Dr. T Prasad, a visiting faculty for NITIE,XLRI and the event MANDI heading the discussions along with Mr. Shashank Paranjpe of Paranjape Constructions, Mr. Dimakh Sahashtrabuddhe of Dimakh Consultancy, Nimesh Marfatia, Founder DENIP Consultants, and Dr. Rahul Pandey, Founder and CEO Converse Today. Dr. T Prasad discussed about the entrepreneurial advantage of India in general and Pune in specific. He also spoke about other cities which would be good hunting grounds for entrepreneurs in India. Mr Paranjpe emphasized on how to become an entrepreneur and the four growth engines of Pune which stretch the entrepreneurial compass of the city. Pune is not only an IT and an education hub but also has a large pool of Agro- based and floriculture industry. He also feels that the Mumbai-Pune expressway is the catalyst for Pune’s growth. His quote ‘Whatever you touch in a new city turns to gold’ brought good applause from the fervent audience. Mr. Sahastrabuddhe opined that an entrepreneur can be successful only when he matures to a certain level after having faced problems. He also emphasized on the importance of a high spirit that needs to exist in the mind of a young entrepreneur. Dr. Rahul Pandey talked about Ludhiana being a very promising city and gave the example of Sunil Bharti Mittal who originated from there. He also cited the example of Kahn in France which in spite of being a small city was branded very well by the government and has hence become such a prominent place for film festivals, telecom conferences etc. Mr. Nimesh Marfatia supplemented the talks with his opinion ‘The two driving forces for starting a business are money and passion.’
The Avant Gardener which means a person who innovates was also a panel discussion on the changing face of Entrepreneurship in India and succeeded the previous session. Moderated by Pradeep Tagare, Director Intel Capital India the panel consisted of prominent personalities like Atul Goel, MD Goel Ganga, Amit Grover, Founder of Nurture Talent, Abhijit Golap who owns a biomedical imaging company in California and is the CEO of Optra Systems and Praneet Mungali of Sanskriti, Pune. Pradeep Tagare exemplified the story of 123 Greetings in Kolkata which was funded by Intel Capital even though it wasn’t the biggest of names but had the sheer idiosyncratic edge. He also gave the example of a Sri Lankan organization which deals with cloud computing and with the least manpower possible have bagged some of the biggest clients across the globe. He said India has access to Venture Capitalists now but the only aspect where we are lagging behind is Imagination. Amit Grover who carries an enormous industry experience having worked with organizations of repute like Onida, Infosys and Asian Paints has started Nurture Talent Academy which aims at reducing mortality of entrepreneurs at their inception. He discussed about how his academy makes new entrepreneurs envisage success and thus help them to sustain their concepts. Mr. Atul Goel started off by recognizing agriculture as the most employment generating sector, second only to construction. His organization believes in constructing sustainable environment friendly buildings. He feels garbage collection and city maintenance are opportunities which have been overlooked by entrepreneurs and also exemplified his thought with a Hyderabad based company dealing with the same. The session turned out to be very interactive and an assortment of questions sprang up not only from the panel members but also from the curious group of students of EABS. The session ended with a huge round of applause and tokens of gratitude were handed over to all the esteemed guests.
The ultimate session of JWEF named ‘Madhyanti’ a name given to Goddess Durga. As the name suggests this discussion was aimed at women entrepreneurs in India and how their success is unparalleled in a male dominated society. Dr. Uma Ganesh, CEO Global Talent Track, flagged off the session as the panel moderator and was teamed up by Kruti Jain, MD Kumar Builders, Sarika Deshmukh from Success Guru, Gunjan Agarwal , Investment Banker at Citibank and Harini Calamur. The panel started with Dr. Ganesh narrating occurrences from her career and how she, in spite of not ever had an entrepreneur in her family, managed to achieve success. In a very avid yet tranquil manner she elucidated about the balance which a business lady needs to maintain between her family and her profession. Kruti Jain recalled how she had to take over the business at a very tender age and how she managed to overcome all the impediments. She emphasized on the importance of networking and said ‘The harder you work, the luckier you get.’ Harini Calamur who joined a leading broadcasting media organisation said that when one starts up as an entrepreneur one needs to take care of trivial things like electricity bills, beverages and other bills even if the business is not in the best of shapes. She also accentuated the importance of knowing the local language and to have access to loans. Sarika Deshmukh also highlighted the problem of getting loans approved in India but also said that people tend to trust women more than men. She quoted ‘Promise only what you can give and never exaggerate.’ She believes in At Home-No Office, and At office- No Home concept. Gunjan Agarwal always stuck to her values and never bribed anyone. She has opened a media school of late which trains journalists. She thinks being an entrepreneur is cool but not easy. She went on to say “Be a job creator instead of a Job seeker.” She also added ‘If the Product is solid you don’t need marketing.’
A bustling round of questions from the audience ended the session and also marked the end of an illustrious 2 day event. It successfully imbibed the spirit of entrepreneurship in the minds of those who attended.
